Belagavi: Suresh Angadi, the union minister of state for railways, now, has become a darling of Belagavits by fulfilling many long pending demands from the railway department, especially after commencing new superfast train between Bengaluru- Belagavi and extending Vishwamanava Express upto Belagavi connecting Mysuru. He is working on many other projects helping Belagavi. Four time MP exclusively spoke to the Today Breakings in an interview. Here are the excerpts.
What is the status of the project laying new railway tracks between Belagavi- Dharwad?
am working on the project. After Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa’s assurance about providing land in writing, I am moving ahead on the project. Already survey has been conducted and detailed project report (DPR) is ready. It might be around Rs 1,000 plus crore project.
The tender will be called once the land acquisition process completes. Since the new tracks will come along the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway – 4, there is no need of acquiring more land. The lane will pass through Hirebagewadi, Kittur, Belur Industrial Area and High Court. I don’t think there will land issues for constructing the stations at Kittur and Belur. Once the project completes, the duration between both destinations will be just half an hour away. The trains having 10 coached will move between both destinations at every half an hour.
There is a demand for more trains to Goa.
Already the bi-weekly passenger train has been commenced. I am working on making it regular, which would help industrialists from both sides, besides transport the vegetables from Ghataprabha and Belagavi to Goa. There are also plans to extend the train upto Miraj.
Are there any plans to fulfill old demands of laying new tracks between Belagavi- Karad and Belagavi- Savantawadi?
We can’t take everything at once. Presently, my first priority is Belagavi- Dharwad new track. We can think about other projects once this project is streamlined.
Will Belagavi railway station will replicate Sabaramati station?
It was a plan earlier as Mahatma Gandhi had landed and boarded trains many times from Belagavi. But, since the model of Sabarmati railway station in Gujarat is too old, we are planning to give-up that plan and build a modern station with two entry points. However, there will be things depicting historical things related to the father of the nation.
Tell something about the ancillary industrial project.
It’s still at the maiden stage. The railway department is checking the interest of investors across the country, to set up such units manufacture equipment required to the railway department. The land has been identified near Kittur but it would be possible only if local investors show interest. I could bring big shots like Birlas, Ambanis or Tatas but I don’t want that. I want local small and medium industrialists should get advantage of this project and create more employment for the local population.
